In a press release from Microsoft today out of Comic-Con ’09, they’ve stated that the upcoming Xbox 360 dashboard update will be released in early August. The exact date for the update is August 11, 2009. Come that date, you’ll have new Netflix features, an Avatar marketplace and a Games on Demand service.

The Xbox LIVE Games on Demand service will launch with over thirty games including Assassin’s Creed, BioShock, LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga, Mass Effect, Sonic The Hedgehog and more. Netflix party support will allow multiple players to watch movies together over Xbox LIVE. The Avatar Marketplace will allow players to buy new clothes for their Avatars.

The rest of the updates we should be seeing: Twitter, Facebook, Last.fm, 1080p movie streaming should come in the Fall.

While the features like the updated Netflix and Games On Demand sound cool I think the big news is going to be when Facebook and Twitter land on the system. I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets national exposure. Not to mention the 1080p streaming. If it’s as good as Microsoft says it is, and why should we start doubting them now, it’ll be a direct dig against Blu-ray.

I still prefer to watch movies from a disc but that’s because I’m a sucker for special features, commentary and all the other stuff they pack onto a Blu-ray disc. And unless MS or Netflix can find a way to give me EVERYTHING the Blu-ray offers I’ll continue to choose physical media over a streaming service.

The worst part is that Sony may never offer streaming 1080p because it will most likely take away potential Blu-ray sales. The last thing they want to do is shut themselves down after finally winning a format war. Maybe too little, too late?
