Eric Lempel has made firmware version 2.80 official on the PlayStation.Blog for the PlayStation 3. The update will improve the playback quality of some PlayStation 3 format software.

Seems like a lackluster update again.

The fact that they’re updating at all means that they’re, hopefully, paying attention to the details that could improve performance but don’t necessarily add any prominent features.

My guess is that Sony is also updating the console more often for security reasons. The fact that you can browse the web may open up the system a bit more than the competition so they could also be slipping in stuff to keep the PS3 out of harms’ way.

Although, I’d like to see that PS Cloud become a reality and that a new XMB or slightly modified version of the XMB is introduced at the same time. And I don’t mind waiting either. The more time Sony puts into the new interface the better. No need to rush this if it’s going to be a half-baked attempt at trying to match the NXE.

It’s not useless if it makes things go faster.
