The PlayStation 3 firmware update will be happening today or tomorrow, folks. An upcoming Resistance 2 patch, set to allow gamers to log-in on multiple accounts, will launch alongside the firmware. Why? Because the current PlayStation 3 firmware cannot do this.
Insomniac’s James Stevenson confirmed this: “Resistance 2 is the first game to fully log-in two PSN accounts. LBP only logs you in locally, and does not register both accounts as online through PSN. This is a big difference, and what is required for split-screen online co-op with other folks.”
Finally, the knot that ties it all together: “And it was dependent on a Sony update, hence why it wasn’t in when the game shipped.”
The Resistance 2 patch will release on March 26th, so the PlayStation 3 firmwarer update would have to release today or tomorrow.

I hope that’s not the only update coming with 2.7. Sure, the dual login sounds cool but I was kind of hoping for something more substantial. Oh well, I guess we’ll all find out together what the new firmware will include but something tells me it’s not going to be anything earth-shattering. Primarily because if something really big is coming it almost always leaks out ahead of time.
This time all we’ve heard is that the update is coming but never what’s included and Sony has never been that great at keeping secrets.
By the way, what was the big MS announcement that was promised by OXM? That the new OnLive system, that could wipe out Sony, MS and Nintendo, has a controller that looks like the their controller? If MS did reveal something I must’ve missed it. That or it wasn’t anything to get excited about.
Is it called 2.7 officially? Why not 2.68 or .69? Oh well, my bet would be this is a firmware update solely for R2 and will not include any other modifications or upgrades.
