PlayStation Home Open Beta Launch Is “Imminent”

SCEA have today confirmed that the open beta phase for their online service for the PlayStation 3, Home, will launch this year. “We’ve been saying it will launch by the end of calendar year 2008,” PlayStation Home director, Jack Buser, responded when asked about a December release. “And that’s getting very, very close,” he concluded, laughing.

Buster has confirmed that the “Launch is imminent,” meaning we could see the release any day now. When he was asked how it would make its way to consoles, Buster gave a wide grin. Seriously, he couldn’t just answer?

I’ve been in the beta since last July so for me it’s pretty anti-climatic but it’s good to see this thing finally get released.

The good news is that SCEE did address many of the problems we’ve been complaining about for over a year but there’s still other little things like furniture setup that could be designed to be easier to maneuver around your personal spaces.

You can now download updated spaces in the background and when it’s done a pop-up message prompts you to enter the space or you can keep walking and talking with the locals.

I’m still not sure why they ditched the Far Cry and Uncharted rooms but my hope is that when they do “launch” this thing those rooms will come back and they’ll have more rooms ready to explore. Hopefully we see that Red Bull room soon and also see other rooms/spaces follow. I’m sure they’ll have a Killzone 2 room soon enough.

But, like EA, I still don’t get the gist of what Home is supposed to be. They took away some of the sharing features like pictures from your HDD into picture frames in your personal spaces and we never saw movie and/or music sharing so other than being a 3D forum I don’t get it.

It’s certainly pretty and cool for the first 30 minutes or so but after bowling and playing Echochrome (which is highly addictive; you could easily lose 30 minutes on that game alone) there’s not much else going on.

What Sony needs to do is use this as a platform to exclusive content like premiere videos or even stuff like live concerts.

Whatever Sony does I hope it works. They can’t afford for this, uh, whatever… service to fail. Nintendo is so far ahead it’s not even a contest and MS is just sitting back watching the money roll in with purchase after purchase of their (now) very inexpensive system.
