Firmware v2.40 Is Out, So What Else Is Needed for the PS3?

July 2, 2008 / 03:16 PM EDT / (@salromano)

A lot. Although firmware version 2.40 has just released late yesterday night, there are still some major features the PLAYSTATION 3 needs, but does not have. We took the liberty of making a list in top priority order with number one being the top.

4. At least Bi-Weekly PLAYSTATION Store Updates – One Thursday, we will receive demos, then the next day, Xbox Live will receive a multiplatform game demo we didn’t receive that Thursday. That forces us to wait till the next Thursday for the demo. With at least two updates a week, we will be able to receive the same amount.

3. In-Depth Profiles – Even though we have that new gamercardish looking card displaying our trophies, our profiles are still mainly the same. We only have our name, comment, about me, and languages. Allow us to put things such as our location, game preference, hobbies, interests, etc.

2. In-Game/Out-of-Game Game Invites – If your friend wants to play you in a match in Resistance, but your too busy playing some Army of Two with another pal, wouldn’t it be much easier to receive an invite for Resistance from your friend, open it up, pop out Army of Two and pop in Resistance and be taken straight to the Resistance match.

1. In-Game Private Voice Chat – Although text messaging is a great feature, it’d be much nicer to just talk to your friends with your mouth instead of your thumbs. That way you wouldn’t have to stop playing your game just to write to your friend.

Give us your thoughts.

It seems as Sony might of taken 2.4 offline, forums are reporting users who can’t download it from PS3 or from the website.

    1, 2, and 3 are probably coming soon :)

Well they pretty much already have the ability to do 4, look at japan for example, they get store updates whenever they want to put something up. The rest of the world on the other hand has some retarded reason and only updates on thursday.

I’m happy about the in-game XMB but for the life of me I can’t understand why people are so amped about custom soundtracks. That is the most useless feature on any system, we needed private chat and better voice quality over our headsets.

kahjah I sorta agree, however for some games it’d be nice like a racing one. For RPGs, Adventure and the sorta I don’t see a point to it. As those games have music designed for what your facing, suppose to give a feel about the characters and stuff, and quite frankly if you are playing RPG and have some rapper raping about tappin hoes and shit…..>.>

I don’t know if anyone’s having the same problem I had, but I was getting a message “Correct hard drive could not be found.” on my 40GB PS3 which had an alternate hard drive in it. It happened 3 or 4 times, actually. If anyone else is in the same situation, try running the fan manually on your PS3. It worked for me and now I’m running 2.40 fine, with Trophy Menus, in-game XMB, etc.

To do it all you have to do is eject any discs you may have in the console. Then power off the switch on the back of the PS3. Hold the eject button and switch the power back on in the back of the console and your fans should spin to kick out some dust. Boot up your PS3 and try it again.

It probably WON’T work for everyone, because it seems pretty random the criteria for failure from this patch. But if you have a compatible PS3, give it a shot and see if it works. Note: even after I did this, the controller didn’t sync up until the PS3 was turned on from the system itself, and the XMB loaded fully. Good luck to you all!

    I hope you’re right Skittles

PS3 Update 2.40 Pulled After Major Problems

The official PlayStation forums (via Kotaku) are exploding today after the recent and long-awaited 2.40 firmware update for the PlayStation 3 hit consoles with some added surprises. Owners of every model of PS3 are reporting problems ranging from the small — microphone’s cutting out — to the monumental — consoles remaining frozen at the initial wave screen. In response, Sony has taken down the update for the time being and made an update to their knowledge center post for the 2.40 boss with the following text:

“UPDATE: 7/2/2008, the PlayStation 3 system software version 2.40 has been temporarily taken offline and will not be available for download as our engineers examine any possible issues with this update. The Knowledge Center will be updated with information as it becomes available; please check back here for further details.”
Before they took action, Sony PR director Patrick Seybold told Joystiq they are “looking into it right now and will work with those customers [to] directly address any issues they may be experiencing.”

Unfortunately, the only currently known fix for those with a non-operational system is a save game-erasing hard drive reformat. One could always transfer saves over to another media device prior to reformat, but the only other option at this time is sending it in to Sony for a $150.00 repair. Given Seybold’s comments, presumably Sony will be working out other fixes for systems that were broken with the update soon.

As we reported earlier, the massive update includes an in-game Cross-Media Bar, the much talked about Trophy system, and many more features. We’ll update with further info when the 2.40 update goes back online.

We’ve all been dying for more updates per week but I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

I’ve said a million times but the new profile cards look like crap for the most part so yeah, this needs to be fleshed out a whole lot more.

And let’s not forget the GIGANTIC notifier for trophies and incoming messages.
