Blu-ray was Big, Now it’s Bigger

Pioneer, in a press release today, has announced they have succeeded in creating a 16 layer Blu-ray Disc with a capacity of 400gb! There is no word on if these discs will be compatible with existing Blu-ray players, such as your PS3, but it is exciting to see the format continually expanding.

Think about it:

60gb PS3 = Would fit almost 7x that amount of data onto one disc

80gb PS3 = 5x the hard drive space

Pioneer will present the details of this research at the International Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage 2008 (ISOM/ODS2008) to be held in Hawaii from July 13.

We will keep you updated on whether the new discs will be compatible with current hardware when the full information and research is released.

Just think. If Kojima maxed out a 50gb disc, imagine what he could have done with a disc 8x that size! Pretty crazy and exciting stuff. Check back for any updates.

According to joystiq.com or korak.com (i can’t remeber xD) the new updated blu-ray discs are uncompatible with the current ps3 as they need to detect fainter signals.

Thougth the new blu-ray players capable of reading these discs are entirely capable of reading previous versions of the blu-ray discs
