Rumor: Heavenly Sword 2 Cancelled?
June 17, 2008 / 11:43 AM EDT / (@)

Rumor has it that Heavenly Sword 2 will never see the light of day. Supposedly, the game was axed after months in development because it is no longer seen as commercially viable. It should be noted though that Ninja Theory, the developers of Heavenly Sword, have said before that they were not working on the sequel anyway. If that’s the case then SCEE may have had a first party developer working on the sequel, but we may never know. Some may be disappointed in this news, but since Ninja Theory was never working on it to begin with, how bad is the news really?

I read a little snippet about this on Kotaku and the way they tell the story makes it sound like HS2 was practically in production but Sony was giving the game the kibosh and yet, as you mentioned, it was reported months ago that Ninja Theroy was NOT working on a sequel.

I think before that they had planned on making a sequel but didn’t plan on using Nariko, which would’ve been an incredible mistake.

Either way, it’s kind of sad to see this entire franchise just go away or go multi-platform (if that’s what happens in the future).

One thing Kotaku also mentioned was that along with whatever Ninja Theory may’ve been working on it’s not great news for SCEE since they’ve already canned Eight Days and The Getaway. I wasn’t too worried about Eight Days (looked pretty one note to me) but I am sad to see The Getaway get the boot. Something tells me, however, that we’ll see the game again but it’ll be another year or more before we do.

I really hope they do this game justice and give the sequels it deserves.

this was one of the first games i played on my ps3 back in nov. 2007.

loved the game, graphics, gameplay and story. Loved playing twing twang..

the game though was toooo short…. and it sucked that all the reviews harped more on its length than its good points.. especially when other short games get better treatment…

i’m not sure who’s behind these decisions of dropping this title but they are wrong for this one. and not trying to get the original team on board is also bad.

i sometimes wonder if the people at sony attend the same meetings. cause it always seems like one group of execs undermine the dealings of other execs.

they cant use nariko though. her story is ended. sorry if its a spoiler for anyone out there. but her first appearance is/was her swan song.

the story is really about the sword.. thats the franchise..

its like soul calibur meets (insert franchise character here)

the story of each person that has held that sword throughout time is the story..

at least thats the way i see it.

Thats because Kotaku is incredibly biased when it comes to anything PS3 almost all the time. Its actually a little ridiculous and I personally dont like reading them often as I cant stand the tone of their articles all the time.

Well it looks like Yoshida strikes again. I don’t know what Sony is thinking I love my PS3 and all but if HS2 8Days and Getaway were canceled for more casual games I am so going to be mad.

Also I wonder what other games have been canceled that no one knows about that gamers would like but casuals would not like so they get canned for those games intead.

All I can say is at E3 Sony had better have a lot of hardcore gamers games and no casual games because if not I am just going to stick to 360 games. Because one thing right now if you have a PS3 and 360 the 360 versions game is better.

So Sony needs to help make there games better and help the third party members too. Plus I think it would be great if Sony buys some more game companies too. I for one would love to see them put in a bid for Take Two. Because if Sony could buy them there would be so many great games that could be on the PSP and PS3.

Even though I wrote it as a rumor. It also has to be remembered that HS2 was never announced and Ninja Theory said they were never working on it. I understand about Eight Days, but The Getaway was never really worked on yet anyway. They didnt plan on working on it until after Eight Days. Sure they may be cancelled but its not like all was lost. There efforts will be diverted into other games currently being worked on and future unannounced games.

I think too many people are getting more worked up about this than they really should be honestly.

Trust me Eric, I know all about Kotaku’s penchant for coloring all Sony stories in the worst light possible.

And to Lord Roah this is the video game world where ANYTHING is possible. Imagine if Nariko’s sister was playable in the game but she had visions of Nariko when she dreamed. Those scenes could be playable. Or as she was whisked away on the boat she magically came back to life.

Either way, video and comic book characters never die. If the designers are clever enough they can make any story make sense.

Sony is crazy to let this franchise go so quickly. Ninja Theory was one of the first developers to really sing the PS3′s praises. Hopefully Sony is prepared for the potential PR s***storm this could become.

With out exaggerating, Heavenly Sword still one of my best
early PS3 games, I still play it from time to time,

    you know why?

it it has a lot challengs to learn/unlock all he moves & combos.

I still enjoy the cutsenses , and I even memorize some of HS dialogues and repeat it a long with them:

My favorite is when Kai says peek a boo A.$.$.h.o.l.e right before she shoots General Fox in the forehead with her arrow

Nariko while facing Whiptail: Oh it’s so much better when you’re ANGRY!!

    “Twing Twang!”

Nariko while facing Whiptail: “Oh, Its so much more fun when your angry…Sister”

Now!!! do you think I’m freak to love this game?

So Long Kai, & may Nariko’s soul rest in peace.
