Free Middleware to Cut PS3 Load Times Offered to Developers

Well, after this there really should be no need for required game installations on the PLAYSTATION 3.

CRI Middleware Co. has announced today that their middleware “File Majik Pro for PlayStation 3″ will be offered to PLAYSTATION 3 develoopers for free starting June 2008 and lasting until March 2010.

What File Majik Pro does is utilizes CRI Middleware’s own data compression and expansion algorithms, and optimizes the file arrangement of the game data to cut down the load time for games to less than half of it’s original load time.

The simple formula is Load Time = Read Time + Seek Time. This middlware cuts down the Read Time by the compressed data and the ability to unzippigng them along side with the read time simultaneously; by re-arranging the data on disk in the order which they are needed will cut down the Seek Time. Developers will also be able to fit even more on the Blu-Ray due to the data compression.

It cuts down the PLAYSTATION 3′s average 22 second load time to 9 seconds by reading 200MB off the Blu-Ray.

GREAT NEWS! I hate installs and long load times… I hope the new games start using this QUICKLY!

    Hopefully devs hop on board.

Hopefully it’s not too late to implement this into games that are already 50% or more in development. It would be nice if Guerrilla Games could take advantage of this since we’re still more than 6 months away from the games’ release.

Since Killzone 2 uses so much of the PS3′s power I would assume that there will be at least one big install or several like MGS4. Either way, it would be nice if they could take advantage of this so we can have minimal or zero installs and load times.

Funny that Insomniac didn’t come up with this since they’ve been touting that Resistance 2 will have very few if any load times at all. Doesn’t mean it won’t have a mandatory install but no load times is always nice even if it means you have to install 10% of the Blu-ray onto your HDD.

I’m excited! It’s great! No more annoying installs?

i don’t think they claim that their middleware will eliminate installs. in theory, it should at least allow developers to reduce install size. since it’s free (until 2010 anyway!), let’s hope it makes it into more games.
