Where are all my PlayStation 3 RPGs?

May 18, 2008 / 07:56 PM EDT / (@salromano)

The PlayStation 2, known as a Japanese console, was famous for the amount of Japanese and Western RPGs in it’s library. With games like Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts II, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, Persona 3, Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, Wild Arms 3, Final Fantasy X, Suikoden III, and more in it’s library, it was the premier console for RPG fans.

Today, the PlayStation 3 only sees a small amount of RPGs in its library. Some would not even be considered an RPG, even though it is listed in that genre. Lets go down a list of currently released RPGs for the PlayStation 3 — or games listed as an RPG.

- Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
- Enchanted Arms
- Folklore (Exclusive)
- Marvel Ultimate Alliance
- Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom (Exclusive)

Those are about it. PlayStation 3 has been in our homes for over a year and a half and we’ve only been catered to about one or two good RPGs. Although, we do have a great line-up of RPGs coming “sometime” in the future. Lets take a look at that list.

- Alpha Protocol (Q1 2009)
- Amphibian Man (Exclusive) (TBA)
- Borderlands (2009)
- Cross Edge (Exclusive) (2009)
- Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice (Exclusive) (2008)
- Elveon (2009)
- Eternal Sonata (Timed Xbox 360 Exclusive) (2008)
- Fallout 3 (October 2008)
- Final Fantasy XIII (Exclusive) (2009)
- Final Fantasy Versus XIII (Exclusive) (2009)
- Free Realms (Exclusive) (Q3 2008)
- Golden Axe: Beast Rider (2008)
- Gothic IV (2009)
- The Last Remnant (2008)
- Rise of the Argonauts (2008)
- Shin Megami Tensei PS3 (Exclusive) (2009)
- Star Ocean 4 (Exclusive) (2009)
- Steambot Chronicles 2 (Exclusive) (TBA)
- Sunrise Eiyuutan PS3 (Exclusive) (TBA)
- Two Worlds (Timed Xbox 360 Exclusive) (2008)
- Valkyria Chronicles (Exclusive) (November 2008)
- White Knight Chronicles (Exclusive) (2009)

Then there are all the projects yet untitled (all exclusive):

- Cavia PS3 Action-RPG
- Gust PS3 RPG Project
- Hudson Soft PS3 RPG Project
- Konami PS3 RPG
- Namco PS3 RPG Project
- Success PS3 RPG
- tri-Crescendo PS3 Project

Now as you can see, PlayStation 3 has the majority in exclusives. My only downs are not having Mass Effect, Tales of Vesperia, and Infinite Undiscovery on the system. The only thing I wonder is: why is it taking so long to deploy all these RPGs? As of now we are stuck with shooting (the majority), racing, action, adventure, fighting, and puzzle titles. Need some motivation? Here is my $60 bucks.

eh the 360 doesn’t really have much more then us, but by mid 2009 we should have quite a bit :). ah can’t wait till ps3 becomes jrpg just like it’s predeccessor =D

    *cough cough*

    Uncharted:Drake’s fortune(exclusive)

If you are speaking of this image, it is false. The art on the cover was created by someone on deviantART.

Hopefully Square will announce something regarding FFXIII at E3.

Well you have a few things wrong on your list Elveon is a 360 and PC only game. But the devs have said they might bring this game to the PS3 but it is not there to do list.

Also RPGs take the longest to make three to four at least if they are to be good. So gives the devs time.

I know these are rumors but they are cool none the less. The rumors say Dark Cloud 3 and Legend of Dragoon 2 will come to the PS3. Plus other rumors say Level 5 will give rebirth to True Fantasy Live Online and bring it now to the PS3.

  • vedev

White Knight Chronicles is ps3 exclusive, its published by sony.

  • yencid

i am missing the rpg genre T.T
everything is friggin first person now…
    it gets trying after time…

Ah, I knew that, just forgot to put the (Exclusive) mark.

Now that you mention a True Fantasy Live Online rumor, mind telling me of where you heard it? I remember getting pissed due to it’s cancellation.

  • Boberman

RPG’s always take time to come to every system. FFVII was the PS1′s 3rd real RPG. And FFX was one of the 1st PS2 real RPG’s. So I neevr expect to see any good ones until the FF has been released. :D

KH3′s systems have not been anounced yet.

“The rumors say Dark Cloud 3 and Legend of Dragoon 2 will come to the PS3″

    GAMESBLOW rumors :D
i actually think games is a real
insider and i trust this but there
    is still doubts.

    @boberman and sal

Thank god you guys just brightened my day

  • BandAiD

Ah…I’m fine right now, because far as I know the RPG system this generation is the PSP. There are a lot on there, and many are coming. I’m looking forward to the ones on PS3 though too.

  • TuxBobble

Eh, I’m disappointed. One of our few RPGs right now is Marvel Ultimate Alliance. What a bad, bad game…haha.

I don’t know, it just didn’t impress me.

Anyway, point is that I’m hoping the future brings good things to the PS3 in the way of RPGs…

In the main time, I’m playing Folklore, the only one I like so far. because of a good story line, and the new way represented in Folklore, so far it’s my favorite.

(Stolen Exclusive) <——- Ha Ha Ha I kinda liked it.

  • incredibilistic

I thought about getting Folklore but didn’t hear a great many things about it.

I haven’t thought much about RPGs in a while but I guess I’m waiting for FFXIII before I really consider getting into any RPG.

Also looking forward to White Knight Story. It’s been a while since we’ve seen anything on that game too.

  • Joe

    @ Sal

The magazine also brought up an old sore spot: True Fantasy Live Online, the Xbox massively multiplayer online RPG that was canceled late in its development cycle. Asked if he’d like to work on MMORPGs in the future, Hino said that he still personally feels like finishing work on TFLO and even has many ideas floating in his head. However, his attentions are currently drawn towards all the other projects at his studio.

So if the TFLO does come out it will not be for the 360 or Wii so it would have to be for the PS3.

  • Skittles

    you spelled stolen wrong XD

  • makeyoubald

Wow, it hasn’t really occurred to me how starved of RPGs the PS3 line-up has been. Still, I’m looking forward to the new Final Fantasy(s), Fallout 3 and Star Ocean 4. White Knight Story looks intriguing but, as of yet, I’m not convinced.

  • Wraith

I’m not sure if you compiled this list yourself or found it elsewhere, but it should be noted that Valkyria Chronicles is scheduled for a November 2008 (not 2009) release. (This is the date for North America, and I would assume the same is true for Europe. Before the announcement of November for North America, the release date for both North America and Europe was given as Autumn 2008.)

  • wacktastic

sorry for being a bearer of bad news but i heard that star ocean 4 is exclusively on the xbox360

    sad but true

  • SaiferX

The square director specifically said whether there will be a Star Ocean 4 on PS3 is undecided and the main reason there are more rpgs on 360 and wii is because there are more people buying 360 and wii it’s the exact same thing that hapenned between PS2 xbox and gamecube
